Landlocked Fleet Electrification Program
Although e-commerce has increased business opportunities within the Global Overnight Delivery space, it has also brought about stiff competition and a market that requires packages delivered the same day or overnight…all at no cost to the consumer. In addition, the industry has governmental and voluntary mandates for the reduction of their overall-carbon footprint. To accomplish this, they have been making a best effort to replace internal combustion ground support equipment (GSE) with battery powered GSE. Unfortunately, the infrastructure costs of installing 220V or 440V 3 phase chargers on-airport are significant. The political capital and financial outlay would have been far too costly and far exceed the time frame allotted. Further, relocating the equipment and charging stations did not answer the question…”what will happen if we have to relocate the equipment in the future?” Unfortunately, the answer was “you would have to complete this exercise again, in its entirety.”

The Challenge
Relocate battery powered mobile ground support equipment (GSE) from one airport to another. The airport where the assets were being relocated did not have charging stations required to charge numerous pieces of GSE and the infrastructure costs were prohibited.
Project Solutions
-
Project Solution 1
Design an alternative business model that enables electrified equipment to be redeployed globally without being tied to the logistics and costs associated with the removal, transportation, and reinstallation of numerous stationary battery charging systems.
-
Project Solution 2
Design, install and test an onboard charging system that is adaptable to 120V and 240V power inputs.
-
Project Solution 3
Provide a user friendly interface and develop a component-based design that will simplify diagnostics and repairs.
-
Project Solution 4
Establish a systemwide model for battery management that resulted in an extended battery life expectancy of 3.2 additional years.
